Existing technique vs. no needle approach

The traditional method of vasectomy involves inserting a needle into the scrotum to anesthetize the area around each vas deferens prior to surgery - a key reason why the procedure can be painful.
With the new, no needle approach to vasectomy, the physician can anesthetize the surgical area with a jet anesthetic device, which delivers the numbing agent without use of a needle.

Why have a needle if you don’t need one?

The No-Needle Scalpel Vasectomy

The no needle approach to vasectomy:

Simplifies the surgical technique
Decrease patient anxiety and reluctance to undergo the procedure
Almost eliminates pain during the procedure.

In a traditional vasectomy, an anesthetic is delivered via a needle into the scrotum to numb the area before the surgical procedure. With this new procedure, the anesthetic is delivered into the target area with a no needle jet injection - decreasing the fear of needles and removing needle injection pain.  Rather than pain and stinging from a traditional injection, the man experiences a very mild pinch and then is immediately numbed.  The amount of anesthetic delivered is miniscule, decreasing the risk to patient regarding an anesthetic reaction and preserving the vasal anatomy for the surgeon and simplifying the surgery.

The no-needle vasectomy is a major advantage and improvement over the traditional vasectomy.  As people learn of this technique, they are coming to demand it.  I wish I had mine done this way.  I can tell you first hand that the needle is painful, very painful.

Consider these important aspects of the no-needle vasectomy

The decision to have a vasectomy is indeed a big one.  Vasectomy is a permanent form of sterilzation.  Though the procedure can be reversed succesffully in 90% of cases, if you think you will want more kids in the future, please consider your choice to proceed with the vasectomy carefully.

If you are reasonably certain that you no longer wish to have children, then the vasectomy is the safest, cheapest, and most effective form of birth control.

The vaectomy is a very safe procedure but it does have certain risks.  I will discuss these risks with you in detail when you come in for your consult but they include infection, bleeding, and risks of vasectomy failure.  Each of these risks actually occurs very infrequently, perhaps one in a thousand procedures.

When selecting a vasectomy doctor, you might want to consider these questions:

  • How many vasectomies do they do per week/per month/per year?
  • How long does it take the doctor to do the procedure?
  • Does he/she accept your insurance or is their cash pay fee reasonable?
  • Can they schedule the procedure to accomodate your schedule rather than just their own?

I am confidant that if you select me your experience will be a positve one.

I look forward to seeing you.

Dr Schoor
